Shippers Association Delivers Refund to Members

ROSEMONT, IL (November 17, 2010)—Participants in the International Housewares Shippers Association (IHSA) continue to realize cost-effective benefits, including reduced ocean freight rates, multiple sailing options with premium service providers and a refund of more than $62,000.

The refund, which has become a staple of IHSA, is awarded by the IHSA Board of Directors at the conclusion of the association’s fiscal year in May. Each participant’s share depends on their level of participation and is based on every 40-foot equivalent unit shipped (FEU).

In 2010, the total amount of refunds grew to $62,618.22, with the refund per FEU being $27.26.  The refund checks ranged from a few hundred dollars to more than $15,000. In 2009, the total amount of refunds was $35,935.82, with $20.16 being refunded for every FEU.

According to IHSA, the unprecedented container space and equipment shortages experienced earlier this year had shippers of all size reassessing the total benefits a shippers association can provide.

“Many companies were forced to pay outrageously high freight rates because they relied on service providers that were unable to keep their supply chain intact. IHSA offered participants a wide range of carrier options plus their cargo moved at the original contract rates,” says David Akers, IHSA’s executive director, The Association currently has direct contracts with seven steamship lines and plans to increase the number prior to the 2011 peak shipping period.

IHSA is a not-for-profit association formed to benefit IHA-member companies by leveraging its members’ volume.   IHSA negotiates freight contracts and partners with other logistics providers to lower supply chain costs. For more information on participating in IHSA, regular members of the International Housewares Association may contact Greg Marti at 513-489-4743 x171 or email gmarti@shippersassociation.org.
