GS1 and GS1US (EAN and UCC)

Definition:
GS1 is the name newly assigned to EAN International. EAN International began in 1974 with 12 European countries with the goal of creating a European Article Numbering (EAN) system similar to the UPC number in the United States. GS1’s mission is to obtain global standardization of article identification.

GS1 US is the name newly assigned to UCC (Uniform Code Council). The UCC is responsible for assigning U.P.C. codes to companies. They are also responsible for the conversion to 14-digit GTINs (Global Trade Identification Numbers). In order to obtain a U.P.C. code, your organization must become a member of the UCC.
