An independent home and garden department store, Lawsons reached its
100th year in 2004. The much-loved family business celebrated by giving
something special to its customers, co-sponsoring Plymouth’s first
ever food festival. Lawsons brought together celebrity and local chefs
and cookware suppliers to create an exciting program of cooking demonstrations
in the heart of the city’s outdoor shopping zone. In-store, Lawsons’ centenary
was marked by a series of inventive promotions and competitions to say ‘thank
you’ to so many loyal customers. Lawsons is also a key player in
housewares retailing at large – for example, John Lawson has devoted
many years heading up the industry’s Parliamentary Affairs Committee,
lobbying Prime Minister Tony Blair and parliament on issues affecting
independent retailers.
